Creative EHR/HIE Interoperability Use Improves Patient CareStories from the Field
We are always interested in hearing about creative and pro-active usage of EHR/HIE interoperability to improve practice flow and patient care. Recently Tabitha Cardenas, Senior Front Desk Coordinator, at Drs. Miller and Peterson in Montrose, CO shared with us how they were able to gather the vast majority of their patients’ Health Fair lab results electronically into their EHR, in an effort to avoid duplicate testing. They have a bi-directional interface with QHN and their EHR, e-Clinical Works.
“One month prior to the Health Fair I sent out an e-message on our Patient Portal to all of the patients that were web enabled,” noted Cardenas. “We advised them about the dates of the health fair and that they needed to consent to have their results sent electronically through QHN.”
“This was very successful for us. We had a large number of health fair labs come in and only a very few did not come in via QHN! We also worked with our patients that were not web enabled, if they had an appointment prior to the health fair we gave them a flyer that mentioned QHN and advantages of having records sent electronically so we could capture them in our EHR.”
